REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEMS
HP High Pressure 2.3M
(modular unit)| 1 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTIONS |
The plant described here is capable of producing, by a unique treatment, 2,300 litres of drinking water per hour, from seawater with 35.000 parts per million, Total Dissolved Solids. The water produced will be characterised by a residual salinity less then 500 ppm TDS. Large Organic molecular substances, such as viruses, bacteria and pyrogen agents will have been removed.
To meet your production requirements we have individualized the following system as a base unit, which can be multiplied together when a greater quantity of water is required to be produced.
The choice of multiple plants is not casual.
In this manner we try to avoid every possible system stop that could happen if I there was installed only a single high pressure pumping group. 10 Base units in tandem can produce close to 1/4 million litres per hour and lose no more than 10% of capacity for maintenance requirements or failure.
The advantages of this solution are indisputable. It is possible, for example,to carry out any kind of maintenance procedure such as membrane substitution chemical cleaning, oil change on High pressure pump etc without stopping production. It is also possible to run multiple units in tandem when full production is required, yet shut them down one at a time to suit production needs, in addition, it is possible to start the units up one at a time and therefore save on the energy required to start a much bigger system. Where it is unsure of the ultimate requirements for example a waterside complex, 1 unit is installed and added to as and when needed.
The process:
The sea water is taken in by the low pressure boost pump, which pumps it through a a sand filtering group, that will get rid of all the larger particles in suspension down to 50 micron; this group will be timed self washing. The water is then passed through a UV sterilizer group that will kill any bacteria before they arrive at the membranes, which could be damaged by their presence.
The following phase will bring the water into a multi cartridge filtering group that will detain the particles in suspension down to 5 micron to avoid the immediate obstruction of the Reverse Osmosis membranes.
In the next step, a dosing pump will inject an anti flocculent solution to avoid the precipitation of the elements, dissolved in the water, on the membranes.
The high pressure pump will push the seawater at 55- 60 bar into the pressure vessels and around the osmotic membranes. Under this pressure the Reverse osmosis will take place.
Through the pressure effects a small proportion of pure water will pass through the membranes (18-20%). This will be called "permeated water" and will be drinking water.
The remaining portion, "the concentrated water", will be dumped back to the sea.
The extraction of only this small percentage keeps the membranes self cleaning due to a high overall flow rate.

| Note: The effective production of drinking water is affected by the temperature of the feed water and nominal production is achieved at 25 degrees C, this capacity can be lower by about 40-50% in feed waters colder than this, another factor affecting production is the cleanliness of the seawater which can clog the pre-filters, and slow the flow rate. |
